RPI-CAM-V2 Sized IMX477 Camera Module for Raspberry Pi
Arducam IMX477 on Raspberry Pi: the need for lighter weight and smaller size
We have released two different products to meet the diverse needs of our customers. However, as more people got their hands on our camera module, the needs of users got refined over time. One of our users told us that he was very surprised by the performance of the IMX477 camera, but it was too heavy and oversized to be used on a drone. His needs were brought to our attention, and we found that many more users had the same needs!
Arducam experts set out to solve this problem and now we are pleased to announce a new member of the IMX477 camera family: Mini IMX477.
Introducing a more powerful camera module in the same form factor
To address the issues above, the Arducam team now shrinks the standard Arducam IMX477 Raspberry Pi camera into an RPI-CAM-V2 sized camera board. Since both the form factor and mounting holes are the same as the V2 camera, it’s better compatible with off-the-shelf camera mount or housing. But the IMX477 offers double the pixel area of the IMX219, as well as back-illuminated sensor architecture for better low-light performance.
Comparison between IMX477 Mini HQ camera and RPI V2 IMX219
|Arducam IMX477 Mini||RPI V2 IMX219|
|Sensor image area||6.287mm x 4.712 mm (7.9mm diagonal)||3.68 x 2.76 mm (4.6 mm diagonal)|
|Still resolution||12.3 Megapixels||8 Megapixels|
|Pixel size||1.55 µm x 1.55 µm||1.12 µm x 1.12 µm|
|Video modes||1080p30, 720p60 and 640 × 480p60/90||1080p30, 720p60 and 640 × 480p60/90|
|Linux integration||V4L2 driver available||V4L2 driver available|
Comparison between standard Arducam IMX477 HQ camera and the Mini version
Compared to the standard IMX477 HQ camera, the mini version has the same electronics and software performance. But the standard HQ camera has a bigger lens mount that can use CS and C lens, or even M12 lens with an adapter, while the mini version can only support the M12 lens. The board size of the mini HQ camera is much smaller than the standard one, and the overall weight is much less as well.
|Standard HQ Camera||Mini HQ Camera|
|weight(including the lens)||70g||10g|
|Lens options:||M12/CS/C||M12 only|
So the mini version of the IMX477 HQ camera will be the best choice for the handhold/head mount or the drone applications in which the size, the weight matters. And it has a dramatic improvement in image quality over the V2 camera.
