Global Shutter Camera

Most of the DSLR cameras and mobile phone’s cameras are using Rolling Shutter technology including Canon, Nikon and iPhones, while industry cameras are using Global Shutter technology. Why cameras are so different, let’s take a look at the facts of these two kind of technology.

Rolling Shutter

Rolling Shutter, usually found in CMOS sensors is a method of capturing image that does not expose the entire sensor pixels simultaneously, actually it exposures line by line from top to bottom.

Global Shutter

Rather than the rolling shutter camera, global shutter camera exposures all pixels at the same time. The shutter opens at a certain of time then closed, blocking the light enter into the sensor.

Here is a short demonstration of how rolling shutter works in a simplified 10×10 CMOS sensor.

What Is Rolling Shutter And Why It Is Cool

Rolling Shutter vs Global Shutter

Which is better: Rolling Shutter or GlobalShutter?

Usually CMOS sensors use rolling shutter systems while CCDs use global shutters. However, this is not universally true. There are CMOS sensors with global shutters and CCD sensors with rolling shutters.

Most of people think rolling shutter is bad. I don’t think so, it is just a kind of technology. There is no better from one than the other if you don’t compare them according to a given application. General speaking rolling shutter is good when low cost, high resolution and high frame rate is needed, while global shutter is good for fast moving objects and machine vision applications.

Global Shutter Camera Breakout From ArduCAM

ArduCAM now introduce two global shutter camera head board based on ON-Semi (used to be Aptina) MT9V034 (0.3MP) and AR0134 (1.2MP). The camera head board can be used with ARM, DSP, FPGA so similar platform with parallel camera interface.

ArduCAM also provide USB camera shield for seamless integration for these global shutter camera board. Mono and color types are abailable for both types. The main spec for each sensor list below.
